About Kyoko

I’m a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) in California. My work is grounded in a core belief: every person already has the strength needed to heal and grow. I offer a safe, collaborative space where you can explore difficult experiences, build insight, and make meaningful, lasting changes.

I specialize in relationships of all kinds: with partners, family, friends, colleagues, and, just as importantly, yourself. I’ve worked with clients across the lifespan, from young children to older adults, and from a wide range of cultural and ethnic backgrounds. Whether you’re facing a specific crisis or simply feel stuck, I’m here to help you move forward with clarity and confidence.

I grew up in both Japan and the U.S., and that gave me a unique perspective on the world. I learned the importance of humility, and also the need to speak up when it matters. My name, “Child of Kyo,” honors the city of Kyoto. I’m bilingual in Japanese and English.

Before becoming a therapist, I worked as an engineer and then had a long career as a business consultant in the finance sector. Becoming a therapist was always my lifelong passion, and it grew stronger when I began volunteering as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) for teens. I still cherish what I learned from those young people, and I continue to volunteer today.

I also take part in the Senbazuru tradition: I fold one origami crane for every hour I spend with clients. In Japan, a thousand cranes symbolize peace and healing, and each one carries my wishes for the people I work with.

Who Kyoko Works With

  • Children, teens, and adults
  • Couples
  • Families
  • Parents, including parents raising children in a new country
  • Japanese-speaking clients, and anyone navigating life between cultures

Therapeutic Approach

I take an integrative approach. I don’t apply a one-size-fits-all model; I tailor each treatment plan to the individual, couple, or family in front of me, combining research-supported methods with genuine warmth and attunement. Alongside talk therapy, I often bring in mindfulness, breathing practices, and practical tools for working with emotions and relationships.

I’m also a trained facilitator of Circle of Security Parenting, an attachment-based program that helps parents understand their child’s emotional needs and build a more secure, connected relationship.
